Speaking out against the UK riots

As 16,000 officers were drafted in to London last night, things in the capital seem a little bit calmer, but riots reached other parts of the country, with lethal consequences in Birmingham.

There has been a lot of misinformation spread on social networks such as Twitter and it can be confusing for people to know what is going on, especially when they are being told to stay indoors to stay safe. I spoke to the Borough Commander for Waltham Forest last night about how they try to counter unfounded rumours and we’ve seen at least two police forces turning to Audioboo to communicate with residents.

I’ve seen a lot of people commenting on the failure of role models to speak out against the riot. UK Rapper Tayong bucks that trend with his Stop The Riots anthem and powerful call for them to step up and speak out:

I’m going to be out in the community again tonight in our makeshift police canteen. Local MP Stella Creasy was there last night to muck-in and help keep the community informed. She was quite adamant that she had no time for grandstanding and handwringing, just wanted to see real action being taken.
