Audioboo 2.0 for Android is here!

Android users rejoice! The new Audioboo app for Android has finally arrived, bringing with it such treats as queued uploading and private messaging.

Look at this shiny new interface! It’s bright, colourful and on a par with the iPhone app at last. You’ve the option to record and save a boo to the upload queue and keep on recording new ones, without having to wait for the first boo to upload, or worry about finding a wifi signal to connect to.

You can send and receive private messages from other users, browse nearby, popular or featured boos, and see what you’ve already uploaded to your account. We’ve kept the design as simple as possible and as close to the iPhone design as we could in case you switch from one smartphone to the other.

I know that it may seem that Android users have been a bit neglected by Audioboo, but we really want to make it up to you. I’m not making excuses, but here’s a brief history of Audioboo and Android story.

Back in November 2009 we launched Audioboo on Android. It was our second platform after our original release on iPhone. Since we only do the iPhone app in house, we outsourced the development to a great developer, Jens Finkhäuser, who created a nice app for us.

Unfortunately, with the Android market expanding, and constant updates to their operating system, we began to encounter some problems. The app began to fail on Android and we didn’t have the budget to constantly update it. (Meanwhile the iPhone app continued to evolve, taking in user suggestions and fixing minor bugs.)

So why did it take so long to get a new Android version? I asked Audioboo CEO Mark Rock for answers:

“Last summer we made the decision to build it again from the ground up. We were recommended a developer who had a strong pedigree of good work and hired him to take it to the next level. He seemed keen.

And then something odd happened. Weeks passed and nothing appeared. Months passed and nothing appeared. Problems with recording, we were told. We called, we emailed, we even tried building our own mini app for Android, which worked fine.

By this time it was November – a full 5 months after the project started. After some fairly blunt email exchanges, we sacked him and scratched our heads. And then we did what we should have done at the beginning – went back to Jens.”

Jens has been working very hard to create Audioboo 2.0 for Android. We’ve had a keen team of beta testers putting the app through its paces to ensure that it played nicely when we released it. We know it’s been a long time coming, but we hope that it’s worth the wait.

Go forth and download it from the Android Marketplace (if you haven’t already!) and please accept our apologies for the delay.
